Introduction: A Faith Often Spoken Of, But Rarely Understood
Many speak of “the faith of Jesus” but few truly understand its meaning. Is it simply believing in Jesus? Is it faith that we place in Him? Or is it something deeper—something that belongs uniquely to Him and is offered as a gift to His people?
The book of Revelation tells us that in the last days, God’s faithful will be identified by two qualities: “Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus” (Revelation 14:12, KJV). Clearly, this “faith of Jesus” is vital to the third angel’s message and to the preparation of God’s people for the closing scenes of earth’s history.
But what exactly constitutes the faith of Jesus?
At its heart, it is the faith that Jesus Himself exercised, and the faith that rests completely on His saving work. It is trust in His ability to save us fully, entirely, and without reserve.
Jesus, Our Sin-Bearer
The gospel cannot be understood without first recognizing the weight that Jesus carried for us. The apostle Paul wrote:
“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21, KJV).
This verse reveals the great exchange at the heart of salvation. Jesus, though sinless, became our sin-bearer. He took upon Himself the penalty of guilt that was rightfully ours. He bore the shame, the curse, and the judgment. He was treated as we deserve to be treated so that we might receive what He alone deserves: life eternal, favor with the Father, and the gift of righteousness.
When we talk about the “faith of Jesus,” we are speaking of the trust that enables us to accept this exchange as reality in our lives.
Jesus, Our Sin-Pardoning Saviour
It is not enough to say that Jesus bore our sins; He also carried them away. On the cross, He became not only our substitute but also our redeemer. He transforms the sinner’s record, taking the guilt away and replacing it with His righteousness.
John writes: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9, KJV).
Here is the power of the cross: sin does not merely rest on Jesus; it is removed by Him. His grace does not simply cover our shame but replaces it with His perfect standing before the Father.
This is why He is called both the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29), and the Advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1).
The “faith of Jesus” is faith that He can pardon completely. Not halfway. Not partially. But fully.
What Constitutes the Faith of Jesus?
To understand the faith of Jesus, we must look at His own life. Jesus Himself lived by faith.
-
In the wilderness, tempted by Satan, He trusted His Father’s Word.
-
In His ministry, when misunderstood and rejected, He leaned on divine strength.
-
On the cross, abandoned by man and seemingly forsaken by God, He still cried, “Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit” (Luke 23:46, KJV).
This is the faith of Jesus—a faith that clings to the Father when all else fails, a faith that trusts the Father’s will though the path is dark, a faith that holds firm when feelings, circumstances, and even sight give no reason to believe.
When we speak of the “faith of Jesus” in our lives, it is not merely faith directed toward Him, but His own faith placed within us through the gift of grace.
It is:
-
Faith in His ability to save fully and completely.
-
Faith that rests in His righteousness, not our own works.
-
Faith that endures trials, temptations, and darkness because it is anchored in His victory.
The Faith of Jesus and the Third Angel’s Message
Why does Revelation emphasize that God’s people will keep both the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus? Because these two are inseparably linked.
Obedience without faith becomes legalism. Faith without obedience becomes presumption. But when combined, they reveal the harmony of trust and love. The faith of Jesus leads to obedience—not as a means of earning salvation, but as the fruit of abiding in Him.
In the last great conflict, when the powers of earth demand allegiance and economic pressure is used to force compliance (Revelation 13:16–17), it will not be human strength that sustains the saints. It will be the faith of Jesus. A faith that believes He is enough. A faith that does not waver though heaven seems silent. A faith that rests in His righteousness when all else is stripped away.
Why This Matters for Us Today
The world is full of uncertainty—economic instability, moral confusion, personal struggles, and spiritual battles. Many feel overwhelmed, burdened with guilt, or afraid of the future.
The faith of Jesus is the answer. It tells us:
-
You are not condemned if you are in Christ (Romans 8:1).
-
You are clothed in His righteousness, not your own failures.
-
You are secure in His victory, no matter the storm.
This is not theory. It is a living reality. When fear presses in, the faith of Jesus reminds us: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5, KJV). When guilt accuses, it declares: “There is forgiveness with thee” (Psalm 130:4, KJV).
Reflection Questions
-
What does it mean to you personally that Jesus was treated as you deserve so that you might receive what He deserves?
-
In what areas of life are you tempted to rely on your own works rather than the righteousness of Christ?
-
How can you practice the “faith of Jesus” in moments when you feel abandoned, fearful, or uncertain?
-
What difference does it make to know that the faith of Jesus is not only about your trust in Him, but also His trust in the Father, now shared with you?
A Prayer for Today
Lord Jesus, I thank You for becoming my sin-bearer and my sin-pardoning Saviour. Help me to rest in Your righteousness and not my own works. Give me Your faith—the faith that endured the cross, the faith that trusts the Father in every trial. May Your victory be my assurance, and Your strength my song. In Your precious name, Amen.
Conclusion: Holding Fast to the Faith of Jesus
The faith of Jesus is not a distant theological concept. It is the living trust of the Son of God, offered to every believer. It is faith in His ability to save fully, pardon completely, and sustain eternally.
Friend, will you embrace this faith today? Will you let His righteousness become your covering, His victory your assurance, His trust your anchor?
Hold fast to the faith of Jesus, for it is the key to peace, endurance, and hope as we await His soon return.
